Illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel

The raw presence of God,
too much for us to look upon
until settled in a man.
The dark was conquered
by love-blazing fire;
death became a tool of love
and blood the bleach.
The cross; love was his meaning.
We live in the sweep of it,
remembering how he took
cool water, a towel for our feet;
understanding the way of love
the more you’re given,
the more will be required.
This all-surrounding grace;
this need to dance,
this need to kneel.
This mystery; the love of God.
