September 23, 2007 Sunday Morning Sermon
Illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel

Your birth broke all the normal
rules of society and biology.
As a child marvel, you listened
and questioned the Temple Doctors,
knowing more than
that commonly known.
You taught with authority;
your deeds amazing with grace,
every kind of dis-ease healed.
You changed the worst of men,
the most wretched of women,
specialized in human hearts.
You gave value to the
devalued and the under-valued.
You baffled and inspired awe
by both your words and deeds,
drawing an attentive crowd.
And we, your followers,
want to be like you;
powerful in word
effective in work.
Why does the whiff of public acclaim
and greatness smell so sweet?
Why do we always strive to be first?
We forget how you took
a basin of water
and a towel for our feet.
