Clay Jars

Table of Contents for series: God of Whom?

November 4, 2007 Sunday Sermon
2 Corinthians 4
Illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel

Not many valuable or worthy
among us, but
mostly simple kinds
in varied sizes and shapes
marked and scarred by life.

I am one of us;
having sinned with my eye
I did not pluck it out, and
with my hand, which yet remains;
having sinned with my mouth
I loved the sound of it,
a sinner; forgiven clay,
as are every one of us.

Clay jars for holy use;
hearts filled with light
not often visible, the knowledge
of the glory of God’s grace
seen in the face of Jesus;
we carriers of it, chosen
not for our strength
but because of our weakness;
the power is all his.
