Illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel

The clay, moist and pliable
turns on the wheel;
the potter’s hands work
in sovereign power
to shape his witnesses.
It is utter madness,
or so it seems, to labor
with such pitiful weakness;
with something so
despised and rejected.
It is the madness of God
to display his power and glory
in a place so unexpected;
in a vessel of earth.
He patiently and skillfully
molds a people. They
respond in some measure
and at the same time
rebel against his claims,
but are never free of his hands;
a people whose service
has always been and ever
remains a broken service.
He never gives up; never
discards what is ruined.
It is the madness of God
to woo and shape his own
till kingdom come.
