A Deepening Dark, an illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel

They have not imagined the weight
of their sin: that it makes a knot
in their hearts, cages the mind’s wings.
Their trouble is only the trouble anyone,
all of us, know: exchange the truth
about God for a lie,
live in a deepening dark.

In a world brittle, seamed with cracks,
ready to shatter, comes a certain slant
of light, a love-blazing fire into the
sensuous night. Found identity
causes their voices to rise in their
throats. From broken hearts, now mended,
like good bone, uprises a spirit-song.
