Taken From: Ephesians 4:17-5:21; Romans 1:16-32

Illustration by Grace Ellen Schiel
Night is breathing close to me,
a sensuous dark;
within me
the dark cave and a fire.
The evangel comes, holding tight
a candle,
shielding
the withering flame, crying out
“Sleeper, awake!
Stand up out of the dead ones!”
a sensuous dark;
within me
the dark cave and a fire.
The evangel comes, holding tight
a candle,
shielding
the withering flame, crying out
“Sleeper, awake!
Stand up out of the dead ones!”
The light appears, splits the dark,
stills the moment.
A love fiercer than I can understand
ripens my heart.
infuses me with life.
I embrace his fragrant yoke
that I may learn him;
how his love works,
this constant love
that illumines everything, makes me
seem transparent till all around
wonder at the life his love has made.
